The building is open to public every day of the year except Christmas Day. Photo ID is required for all adults and bags and backpacks will be searched.

Free tours are given by the State House guides on request from the State House Visitors' Center on the main floor of the State House. No tours are given on Thanksgiving Day, New Years Day or the following state service reduction days: September 3, November 24, December 23 and December 30, 2010 and May 27, 2011.

Tours are available at the State House Visitor Center located on the first floor in the Archives Room. The Visitor Center is managed by the staff of the Maryland State Archives. There is no charge for the tours.

No reservations are needed. Just check in with the Visitors' Center staff to let them know you would like to take a tour. The Visitors' Center is on the main floor of the State House and its phone number is 410.974.3400. However, if you have a group that would like a tour at a specific time, you can book it by calling the Visitors' Center ahead of time. These tours are also free.

In the Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. Senate Building there is the exhibit "Treasures from the Maryland State Archives" on the ground floor.
There are changing exhibits on the second. On the third floor is the exhibit "Colonial Encounters in the Chesapeake: The Natural World of Native Americans, Europeans and Africans, 1585-1800. On the fourth floor is the exhibit "A Priceless Legacy: Charles Carroll of Carrollton's Papers and the History of Maryland.

In the Casper R. Taylor House of Delegates Building there is a historical exhibit about the important events that have taken place in the State House and the history of the State House.

Both of these buildings are within a block of the State House.
