Reference Services
Please note our hours of operation
The Maryland State Archives has announced new procedures for handling reference requests. These changes are due to cuts in the Archives' budget and a subsequent reduction in staff.
The new procedures for handling reference inquiries and requests for documents, including vital records, mean that all requests must be submitted by mail, fax, or email. No phone requests can be accepted. Following are the contact addresses and fax number for Archives reference requests.
Reference Department
Maryland State Archives
350 Rowe Boulevard
Annapolis, MD 21401
Fax: (410) 974 2525
Email: ref@mdarchives.state.md.us
Records can also be requested by visiting the Archives' website at mdsa.net or by coming in person to the Archives during the above opening hours.
Please keep in mind that all copy and research fees are non-refundable, even if no information is found. However, we will mail you a report on the search and suggestions for further research. We will also determine what agency may hold the records you need and will advise, providing you with contact information.
Security
The State Archives and State Government are under increased security in the wake of the September 11th tragedies. The Department of General Services, which is generally responsible for security in State buildings, has instituted upgraded security measures for the Archives' building.
All Archives employees or other State employees will have to show an I. D. each time they enter the Archives' building. The guard has a list of names for those new employees who have not yet been issued an I.D.
All visitors to the Archives will need to show a picture ID and are subject to having purses, brief cases, bags, etc. searched. Regular registration procedures after the guard searches a visitor's/patron's bags are still in effect.
All staff and visitors must use the main entrance.
We will keep you updated on the status of security measures and we appreciate your cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns about security, please contact Richard Richardson at richardr@mdarchives.state.md.us
